When your Chiropractor asks you, have you done your home exercises... 

do you find yourself saying things like; I'm too BUSY, I FORGET, they are BORING?

DON'T WORRY, you're not alone! Almost all clients will say this at some point, the key here is recognising what your main struggles are with the exercises and tackling it head on. 

Firstly, I want to talk about how important exercises are in addition to Chiropractic (the boring bit). Chiropractic is about stimulating the nervous system and restoring function to your musculoskeletal system, HOWEVER, the majority of the time the tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) tighten or weaken to a point where you need to be stretching or strengthening yourself alongside your adjustments. 
 
Now onto the common responses, we don't want them to be boring, to get in the way of your lifestyle or for you to completely forget them, I'm going to run you through a few mindset changes that may help you enhance your care through exercise.
  • I'm too BUSY - I completely agree, these days the majority of us lead very hectic lifestyles, in which we feel that we cannot possibly fit anymore in. However the best way we see clients succeed and flourish is when they fit the exercises around THEIR routine. A few examples are, exercising while brushing your teeth, while waiting for the kettle to boil, when you're on the toilet, watching TV, in the shower.  Here are just a few times you may find yourself with a pause in your day where you can make the most of the time by simply adding an exercise in. Then before you know it you will have completed all of your stretches/strengthening by the end of the day. 
  • They're boring, I again, agree, repetition of the same movement can be boring, similar to brushing our teeth, I mean, who thoroughly enjoys brushing their teeth, yet we all do it twice a day. This is because it's an ingrained behaviour instilled in childhood, SO we need to ingrain our exercises. Just because you can't see our spine doesn't make it less important than our teeth to look after. After all it is the 'backbone' of our body. 
  • I forget - this is very common, we all have so many things to do in the day that the last thing that we typically think about is our exercises- try to fit them in throughout the day or set an alarm. It also helps to have an 'in advanced' mindset- thinking- ' if I do my exercises today I will be more mobile tomorrow'. 
The majority of us nowadays have sedentary lifestyles causing pressure on joints where there shouldn't be any, or we aren't symmetrical in things like lifting. These activities result in injuries whether acute (short term) or chronic (long term). Chiropractors can educate you on correct postures and adjust you, but a general consensus among chiropractors is that if you follow your exercise plan you WILL respond much faster and ultimately it will save you TIME and MONEY.
 
Despite what you may think, we don't enjoy nagging you to do your exercises. BUT we really can feel a huge difference when you are proactive in your care. Remember our job is to get you independent not dependant.
